Theatre Day 2010 will be held at the Best Western Hotel Bristol, Newquay

 on Saturday 30th October 2010

LATEST EXCITING NEWS

We are delighted to announce that we have a leading Voice Coach, Simon Ratcliffe

to run the Theatre Day daytime workshop, entitled:

CAN YOU HEAR ME AT THE BACK?
Too often, when the director says, 'Louder!', the actor pulls in more air, forces more breath through a
constricted throat, and with a great deal of effort may be heard but with enormous distortion to
normal human communication. The next night there is no voice, only a hoarse. Continue this way
and the actor is in danger of permanent vocal damage. Or in the effort to be heard, the pitch goes up
to an unpleasant shriek that offends the ears of the audience. What is to be done?

In this workshop we will explore practical and pleasurable ways for the actor to discover resonance
and clarity of articulation without greater effort. Come in rehearsal clothes for ease of movement and
with a few lines of a favourite text learned by heart.

Simon Ratcliffe was a community worker in his twenties, a teacher in his thirties, then went to Central
School of Speech and Drama to study for an MA in Voice Studies. He has just completed a
rigorous teacher training with leading voice teacher, Kristin Linklater, author of Freeing the Natural
Voice. Since 2003, he has worked in drama schools, including Central for 3 years, and taught
summer schools at NODA and RADA. In January 2010, he led voice warm ups for the RSC Arabian
Nights company. He is currently Lecturer in Voice at Birmingham School of Acting.
