CDA THEATRE DAY WORKSHOP 2010

The 2010 CDA workshop was run by voice coach Simon Ratcliffe.  Simon teaches voice at Birmingham School of Drama, and has led voice warm-ups for the RSC , so we were very privileged to get the chance to work with him.

Simon explained that sound comes from relaxation, and led us through a series of physical stretches and visualisations to help us relax and get into contact with the diaphragm and give us greater postural awareness.  We were encouraged to produce sound very gently at first, using our natural breath production.  As the day went on, we used these techniques to speak a poem or passage of text, aiming for greater clarity without strain.

Simon explained that full-time drama students spend at least a year perfecting these techniques, so it was a tall order to make any great changes in only one day, but he did leave us with an awareness of voice production, and we will take away the knowledge that the more we try to force sound, the more strangulated it will be.  So – the next time the Director shouts ‘louder’ – just relax!

Send us your views on what workshops would interest you in the future by contacting
